David Fincher might not have selected, or at least announced, a new film to make just yet, but that’s probably because he’s busy working with HBO. In addition to the American take on Utopia, The Hollywood Reporter has heard that he’s also scored a series order for Video Synchronicity{ =nofollow}.

The series – that’s the working title, by the way – follows Robby (Charlie Rowe), a young man who drops out of college in 1983 and heads for Hollywood with the hopes of directing a science-fiction epic. First he has to navigate a thorny first gig working in music video production.

According to the trade mag, the show has echoes of Entourage, at least in terms of its planned 30-minute episodes and its focus on the players in the exploding world of music videos: the directors, record executives and crew members, with the appropriate lashings of sex, drugs and, if not quite rock ‘n’ roll, then electro pop and soul. Fincher has a teeny bit of experience in the music video world, having won two Grammies for his work. He’s on board as producer and is working on scripts alongside Bob Stephenson, Rich Wilkes, Michael Lehmann and Marcos Siega.

Although a lot of details are under wraps, the cast reportedly also contains Sam Page, Jason Flemyng, Kerry Condon, Elizabeth Lail, Corbin Bernsen and Paz Vega.

This marks the third TV show Fincher has been involved in, including Netflix’s House Of Cards and the still-embryonic Utopia remake. And that’s not even counting the HBO-based adaptation of James Ellroy’s Shakedown he wants to bring to life alongside the crime writer.
