David Dobkin Plans King Arthur Pic

Yep, another one

Though he made his name with big comedy romps such as Wedding Crashers and Fred Claus, it looks like director David Dobkin is itching to go in a very different direction for a future film. He’s just been the centre of a furious bidding war for his script about King Arthur, with Warner Bros. swooping in to yank the deal from the stone auction table.

While it’s still at a very early stage, the Heat Vision blog has heard that the eventual film is planned as a big-budget action adventure, which would be something of a departure for Dobkin. The closest he’s come to this sort of film is Shanghai Knights, which had more of a buddy comedy feel to it.

And though it looks like Arthur and his story are back in favour in Hollywood, the intriguing element here is that two of the bigger projects being planned about the Round Table are also both at Warners – the Excalibur remake that Bryan Singer is developing and the Warren Ellis-scripted “gathering of the knights” take that has Guy Ritchie interested. It remains to be seen which version (if any) makes it to the screen first.

Before he can get down to any solid work, however, Dobkin will be out and about promoting his latest comedy, the Jason Bateman/Ryan Reynolds body swap tale The Change-Up, which arrives over here on August 5.
