In the wake of Friday’s tragic cinema shooting in Colorado, all the studios agreed to hold off reporting box office figures until today. And despite the unfortunate connection between the latest Batman film and the incident, The Dark Knight Rises still soared to the top of the charts, scoring $160.8 million, making it the third biggest opener ever after The Avengers and the second half of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows.
Naturally, all the other studios decided to hold off trying to compete (at least with wide releases), though the likes of Ice Age: Continental Drift still did well, with the ‘toon dropping one place to second with $20.4 million. Despite the fresh superhero competition, The Amazing Spider-Man also managed to keep bringing in the money, adding $10.8 million for a $228.6 million US total to date. Ted was fourth, earning $10 million, while Brave rounded out the top five with $6 million.
Magic Mike stayed in sixth place, taking in $4.2 million, while Savages was down to seventh with $3.4 million. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection was eighth, making $2.2 million, with Moonrise Kingdom holding at ninth with $1.8 million and Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love snuck back into the top 10 with $1.4 million.
