Techno-thriller, Daemon, by Daniel Suarez, is being developed by Paramount for the big screen. The book, out officially this month, was originally self-published by Suarez, proving that sometimes things can go right for the little guy.
The book tells the story of dying software genius Matthew Sobol, who creates a computer programme to fight mankind after he is gone. Designed to run without human control, 'daemons' are usually tasked with running everyday processes, but now wreak havoc on humanity via the internet and anything controlled by computer. A sequel called Freedom is already on its way.
With man vs. machine stories going strong in Terminator: Salvation and **Surrogates **for 2009, Paramount are looking for their own way to get in on the action. Sounding like a wider-spread HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey and with scenes where Sobol's house fights investigating police which are straight out of Demon Seed this could be interesting - but can it ever be a patch on D.A.R.Y.L. or the classic that is The Net?
