Crowe Goes With Bra Boys

Russell's Directing Debut

First up, this has nothing to do with lingerie or transvestite behaviour of any kind. The news is that after narrating Bra Boys, the documentary about a Sydney surfing gang which has been getting a lot of publicity down under recently, Russell Crowe has gotten all inspired, and has decided to direct his first feature film about the very same subject.

The 'Bra' of the title is an abbreviation of Maroubra, one of Sydney's beachside suburbs. Ostensibly the documentary is about the 'cultural evolution' of the suburb and the gang which has made the location its home since the '60s, but at it's core is the story of the four Abberton brothers, Sunny, Koby, Jai, and Dakota, who are all bound by their roots, their home, and the gang. And you can bet a slab of VB that this is what Crowe is going to have screenwriter Stuart Beattie (another Aussie, who as we reported yesterday, is scribe for Collateral, the forthcoming Gears Of War and most pertinently 3:10 To Yuma, in which Crowe stars, among others) focus on.

There's no word yet on whether Crowe will take a role in the film, in fact there's been no talk of casting at all, but the producer is Brian Grazer, with whom Russ has already worked with on Cinderella Man and A Beautiful Mind and the forthcoming American Gangster.
