It’s not that long ago – certainly not eons – that we saw the first poster for The Croods, DreamWorks Animation’s big family comedy hope for early 2013. If you wondered what those characters might sound like and how they might move, wonder no more. The trailer is online and can be viewed above. If HD is more your thing, then you can head to Apple.

Set in a fictional “lost” prehistoric era, The Croods charts what happens when the family – voiced by Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman and Clark Duke – are suddenly forced to move from their safe cave due to continental drift.

Grug (Cage) is an overprotective dad who doesn’t want to expose his family to new things, because "new" in their world usually means "dangerous". Yet with no choice in the matter, the family discovers that there really is much more to life. Even if it’s not all as safe as Grug might prefer.

The characters definitely speak a little more fluently than you might expect given their early development level, but with that cast providing the voices, it feels like it’ll be a lot of fun. Particularly since it features the filmmaking talents of How To Train Your Dragon’s Chris Sanders. We’ll meet The Croods properly on March 22.
