Cherno Alpha Gets Its Poster

Not to be outdone by Fox’s recent postergasm on behalf of The Wolverine, Pacific Rim continues to fire back with a broadside of Giant Robot Imagery. Yesterday we met the Japanese Jaeger, Coyote Tango, and today it’s the turn of Russia’s hulking metal brute, Cherno Alpha.

Just as big and powerful as its comrades-in-Kaiju-bashing, Alpha features giant metal hands and shoulder-mounted weapons aimed at defeating those destructive creatures from another dimension.

Because, just in case you forgot, Guillermo del Toro’s latest takes place in the near future, on an Earth where the Kaiju have been battering humanity’s cities for years. Even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenceless in the face of the relentless assault. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh Becket) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi’s Mako Mori), who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Ron Perlman, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Clifton Collins Jr. are also among the cast for the film, which touches down on July 12. Give the latest trailer a gander if you need any more reminders how epic this thing looks.
