BAFTA Nominations 2017: La La Land And Arrival Lead The Way

With awards season officially in Full Swing, it was the turn of the Brits to have their say. The BAFTA film awards – awarded by the British Academy Of Film And Television Arts, and considered by many at least on this side of the pond to be the British Oscars – announced the nominations for their 70th annual awards show.

In keeping with this awards season's biggest trend, Damien Chazelle's musical La La Land – stil glowing from its historic seven wins at last weekend's Golden Globes – came away as the frontrunner, with a stonking 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor/Actress nominations for the leading pair of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

Nipping at La La Land's heels are cerebral sci-fi Arrival and psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals, with nine nominations apiece. Neither film has been in the awards conversation much so far, which suggests BAFTA may trod its own path this year; Manchester By The Sea and Moonlight, the other big frontrunners this season, earned only six and four nods each, respectively.

As usual, much of the focus is on British talent, with five nominations for Ken Loach's timely drama I, Daniel Blake, including both Best Film and Best British Film. Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them also earned five nods. But there was relative disappointment for Andrea Arnold's American Honey, which picked up just one nod for Best British Film.

There were other notable absences from the nominee list. Martin Scorsese's Silence, a passion project thirty years in the making, failed to pick up a single nomination, after a similar shut-out at the Globes. And it was a disappointing morning for the team behind Love And Friendship; the Jane Austen comedy, so far largely ignored by awards shows despite universal critical praise, was again cruelly snubbed here, with no nominations for its director Whit Stillman, nor its stars Kate Beckinsale or Tom Bennett.

Stephen Fry will return to host the 70th annual BAFTA film awards in a glitzy ceremony this year held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, on 12 February. The full list of nominees are below.
