Among the smattering of Disney ‘live-action’ remakes heading our way, a fresh take on ‘90s favourite Aladdin is arriving slap-bang in the middle of summer. The ‘street rat’ is back at the hands of director Guy Ritchie, with Will Smith bravely stepping into the role of the Genie, and Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott donning the pointy-toed shoes of Aladdin and Jasmine. While the Aladdin trailers so far have hewn closely to the imagery of the beloved animated classic, fans of the original can expect plenty of new stuff – including a more active role for its Princess. Here’s a brand new image of Jasmine and Aladdin in the Agrabah marketplace, as seen in the new issue of Empire.

“In the original movie, it felt like [Jasmine] didn’t have as compelling a goal,” producer Dan Lin tells Empire. “Her main aim was to find the love of her life. In this case, the romance is important, but she also wants to see more of Agrabah, and take more of a leadership role in ruling the city. Her character has a much stronger journey.”
