Neil Young’s latest film outing and his first since he endured touch-and-go brain surgery last year — is another validation of his place in the grand pantheon of rock ’n’ roll. Jonathan Demme’s film of Young’s concert in Nashville exquisitely captures the singer-songwriter’s gritty, rustic tunes, with the sepia-soaked staging providing the perfect backdrop for Young’s emotional delivery.
From the delirium that greets Old Man and Heart Of Gold to the hushed reverence brought on by the live premiere of When God Made Me, Demme manages to place the viewer smack-bang in the front row of the theatre. Essential viewing for Young fans, and a beautifully shot introduction for those yet to discover the man and his music.
