The status of Studio Ghibli's filmmaking operations may still be cloudy (though Miyazaki is still apparently working on his new film and the company backs other productions such as The Red Turtle), but the home of Totoro, Princess Mononoke and more is expanding its real-world presence with a theme park.
Don't go expecting a Catbus rollercoaster or other big rides; this is intending more to be a celebration of the natural world with some beautifully crafted architecture and gardens that will provide changing, year-round foliage.
Ghibli Park is set in the world of My Neighbour Totoro and is being planned for a 200 hectare plot of land outside Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture, Japan that originally housed the 2005 World's Fair, which itself had a Ghibli exhibit. All being well, the park should open in 2020. There are no plans to spread the attraction worldwide at this time, but visitors to Japan can already visit the Ghibli Museum in Inokashira Park, Mitaka.
