David Tennant replaces Martin Freeman in this follow-up to 2009’s likable Brit-hit, with the pupils of St. Bernadette’s competing in a national song contest. In an ever more far-fetched and overlong road trip to the finals, the funny, natural kids are sidelined for adult drama and plot twists galore, with Tennant playing two roles, Wootton clowning ever more outrageously and a huge cast of supporting kooks to cram in. A cast this gifted and endearing means this will still be watchable if you catch it on TV in a Christmas coma, but it’s sadly no seasonal classic.
