That’s the question posed during two hours of classic soul and Southern stomp that will thrill musos and introduce the wider world to the Muscle Shoals Sound and its cranky-but-inspiring originator, Rick Hall. Remembering their seminal recording sessions there are artists from Aretha Franklin to Wilson Pickett, whose sceptical first visit to the studio morphs into R&B alchemy captured in terrific archive footage. The real stars, though, are gifted local studio players The Swampers: in Shoals slang, some seriously greasy cats.
