Moshi Monsters: The Movie

There are over 80 million worldwide users of the Moshi Monsters game, so a movie version was probably inevitable. But these cutesy little critters and their DayGlo world will satisfy only the very youngest viewers, with the characters either annoying or anodyne. The animation looks exactly like a Saturday-morning cartoon, all big-eyed weirdos lurching through static landscapes, and the plot — collect things to ransom another thing — offers nothing new. Despite peppy songs and interesting supporting characters (the world’s cutest zombie), even 81 minutes is slow going.

For the very young, the surreal, sweet-toothed pleasures will be captivating. For the older audience member, it may be the longest 81 minutes they've ever spent.
