Brigadier General Frank D. Merrill leads the 3,000 American volunteers of his 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), aka "Merrill's Marauders", behind Japanese lines across Burma to Myitkyina, pushing beyond their limits and fighting pitched battles at every strong-point
An ultra-tough World War II movie from maverick director Sam Fuller, with craggy-haired Jeff Chandler dragging his war-weary men through the jungles of Burma and displaying such a will of iron that it's not too much of a surprise when he comes near to cracking up.
It's one of those movies in which soldiers seem to be more likely to get killed by their own officers than by the enemy, with a great bunch of sweaty character actors, Andrew Duggan, John Hoyt, Ty Hardin, Claude Akins, as the unshaven G.I. grunts. All in all an enjoyable war film, the best bit being the banter between said grunts.
Just above average war film with engaging performances.
