Mark Of An Angel Review

Elsa becomes convinced that she has found the daughter apparently lost in a maternity ward fire 6 years ago, living with a rich couple.

★★★★

There are shades of Hitchcock in this gripping psychological drama of obsession and loss. Based on a true story, it focuses on single mum Elsa (Catherine Frot) who becomes sure that the child of an affluent couple is the daughter she lost in a maternity ward fire six years earlier.

Her conviction soon pitches her into a battle of wills with the girl’s mother (the impressive Sandrine Bonnaire), in which the maternal turns malevolent and threatens to tear both families apart. Safy Nebbou builds the tension expertly, and there’s a set-piece based around a school ballet performance of which Hitch would have been proud.

Unsettling drama with powerful central performances
