American was corespondant in Mark Elliott is in Hong Kong, seperated from his wife, and pursuing an attractive Eurasian doctore at the close of the Chinese Civil War. She is the daughter of a Nationalist general, and their cross-cultural relationship is made difficult by her Chinese family.


He is William Holden, in his leading man prime, as a married newsman. She is Jennifer Jones, wife and product of epic producer David O Selznick, as a widowed Eurasian doctor in Hong Kong.

One can guess the rest as they snatch a bit of happiness before he leaves her for the Korean War. Based on a true story, it's still trite, but, as these things go, wonderfully well done, with a faaabulous tearful ending.

Slushy but touching stuff and Jennifer Jones is full of charm.
