Love Hurts Review

Image for Love Hurts

Fleeing his various ghastly relatives at every opportunity, habitual adulterer Paul fills his time before his sister's nuptials in pursuit of one of the wedding party - a Bullied housewife.

★★★★★

Paul Weaver (Daniels) and his boozy dad Boomer (Mahoney) have their long-nurtured grievances and argue constantly in this incredibly dull and charmless comedy drama about a resentment-riddled family reluctantly brought together for a wedding, where Paul pursues a downtrodden homemaker who is quite possibly the most boring woman on earth. Sounds hilarious, huh?

A few of the hatchets do manage to get buried in the predictable course of events, and there is one memorably truthful, affecting outburst from Judith Ivey as the seduced and spurned bridesmaid, but if this sad and foolish lot is the typical American family then it is little wonder that the US is in such moral decline. Director Yorkin, at this point with a dazzling TV career behind him and six Emmys, could rarely strike it lucky on the big screen - with the notable exception of his neglected drama Twice In A Lifetime - and this lame follow-up to Arthur 2: On The Rocks is another disappointment.

Unsurprisingly, he hasn't directed another feature since.
