Lonely Hearts Review

Image for Lonely Hearts

Lonely Alma is suckered in, by scamster Frank Cigetti and joins the con. He seduces women and she helps by posing as his sister.

★★★★★

This has less in the way of sheer stockings than most erotic thrillers, but at least it has a plot worth following, interesting (if deeply unattractive) characters, and some psychological depth. Beverly D'Angelo is a newly thin compulsive overeater who gets mixed up with a sweet-talking gigolo-cum-real estate fraudster (Eric Roberts) and winds up as unhealthily devoted to him as she once was to fudge cakes, taking to the road as he fleeces, and occasionally kills, rich and stupid women.

Meanwhile, private eye Joanna Cassidy, giving the performance Kathleen Turner should have given in V.I. Warshawski, zeroes in on the scumbag, intent on bringing him to book and rescuing the compromised D'Angelo, who goes on cookie binges when the going gets rough.

Nicely tense time-filler.
