Leave To Remain Review

Image for Leave To Remain

Three immigrants, Afghanistan-born Omar (Ousellam), compatriot Abdul (Masieh) and the diffident Guinean Zizidi (Mwanza), take steps to settle in Britain under the watchful eye of Toby Jones' teacher. Violence, though, is never far away from disrupting their new lives in Britain.

★★★★★

Charting the lives of young asylum seekers at a shelter for homeless teens run by a warm Toby Jones, Bruce Goodison’s film boasts an interesting milieu, strong performances and good moments. It’s authentic but nonetheless feels didactic and doesn’t really grab as it might.

Former documentary-maker Goodison has a keen eye for the challenges faced by migrants and brings it to bear with a compassionate, if sometimes mildly lecturing, drama.
