Back in January, the first teaser trailer for much-praised period drama Lady Macbeth arrived online. It has now been followed by the full trailer, which explains more of the story.

Loosely based by scriptwriter Alice Birch on Nikolai Leskov's 19th century novella Lady Macbeth Of Mtsensk District, the story focuses on Katherine (Florence Pugh), a young woman dealing with a tough life in rural England in 1865.

Essentially sold into loveless marriage with a bitter, paranoid man twice her age (Paul Hilton's Alexander), she suffers through humiliation and discomfort from both her lacklustre hubby and cruel father-in-law (Boris, played by Christopher Fairbank). Her one release is a passionate affair with groomsman James (Cosmo Jarvis), though it's Katherine who is the driving force behind the illicit relationship.

Lady Macbeth will be out on 28 April.
