16 year-old Nico comes to stay with his best buddy Dani, only to risk their friendship to pursue pretty tourist, Elena.

★★★★★

Based on a stage play by Jordi Sanchez, this Spanish rites-of-passage picture boldly addresses the identity crises that strike many adolescents as they seek to establish their sexual persona. But not everyone is going to buy the notion that teenage lads will unself-consciously masturbate together, let alone blithely perform fellatio in the name of innocent experimentation.

However, director Cesc Gay still succeeds in exploring the rawness of teenage emotion and the temptations of physical curiosity, as 16 year-old Nico (Vilches) comes to stay with his best buddy Dani (Ramallo), only to risk their friendship to pursue pretty tourist, Elena (Orozco). The performances are affectingly credible, but the direction is discreet to the point of anonymity and, thus, the intensity and psychological authenticity of the scenario is diluted.

For such a small and intimate film, it's unusual that it should feel so impersonal, while director Gay's assumptions as to what it 'normal experimentation' are somewhat wide of the mark. But the core of the piece is sound and entertaining.
