The Iron Ladies Review

A Thai volleyball team made up of a motley crew of gays, lesbians and ladyboys tries to triumph against all odds.

★★★★★

There's yet to be a sports movie in which the underdog hasn't triumphed or, at the very least, won something more than victory. So don't expect this Thai volleyball comedy to buck the trend. After all, it's already bent the rules in having a motley crew of gays, lesbians and ladyboys as its heroes.

Such is the emphasis on dress sense and make-up that this has more in common with Bring It On than such 'gender-benders' as A League Of Their Own. As in that other unlikely-but-true tale, Cool Runnings, the squad is forced to endure all manner of obstacles en route to the big championships. But Yongyoot Thongkongtoon wisely employs a similar blend of slapstick and sentiment, and while the result may be shamelessly short on sophistication, it's still effortlessly entertaining.
