Imagine this... an Eddie Murphy comedy that is neither offensive nor offensively bad. Well, after the horrendous misfire of Meet Dave, Imagine That is a sweet surprise of a film that goes some way to restoring Murphy’s reputation. Refreshingly, this tale of a divorced stockbroker who finds himself receiving killer tips from what appear to be his daughter’s imaginary friends doesn’t feature a single obvious special effect, which allows director Karey Kirkpatrick to focus on some decent comic interplay between Murphy and rival Thomas Haden Church. But the real draw here is the genuinely affecting relationship between Murphy and newcomer Yara Shahidi as his daughter, giving an Eddie Murphy movie real warmth. Imagine that, indeed.
