We were as surprised as anyone when we learned last year that there was a remake of classic vampire tale Nosferatuin the works. It appears yet another team has beaten that project to the production punch, and shooting has kicked off with Hellboy's Abe Sapien and all-round creature expert Doug Jones in the lead role as Count Orlok.
When it was first reported, former Warner Bros. man Jeff Robinov was developing the idea, with The Witch's Robert Eggers attached to write and direct, but now Variety brings word that David Lee Fisher, who made 2005's The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari remake (also with a certain D. Jones in front of the camera) has gotten his planned re-working of the vampidea up on its feet first.
Fisher has been developing this one for a while, hitting Kickstarter to raise funds for the project, which he describes as "a feature-length, faithful homage to this classic masterpiece through use of an updated story structure, plot pacing, visual effects, and importantly sound and music." Variety's report adds that he'll shoot the cast live-action and include colorised digital backgrounds from the original 1922 film, which was famously controversial for being an unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel.
Joining Jones (surely the perfect person to inhabit the role these days) in the cast are Emrhys Cooper, Joely Fisher, Sarah Carter and Jake Turner, and this may mean that Eggers' take vanishes back into the shadows, or we get a Nosferatu-off.
