Goob, The

“Have a good life, son. if you can get out of this shithole,” is the first line and theme of this coming of (r)age tale from Guy Myhill set amid the stockcars and pumpkin fields of rural Norfolk.

Newcomer Liam Walpole (Goob) is a distinct presence as the titular teen, despairing as his mum Janet (Sienna Guillory) fawns over her brutish boyfriend (Sean Harris being a complete shit as only Sean Harris can be). There’s a welcome American indie feel to this film, and while it never truly transports, Myhill’s debut has admirable artistic ambition and a pungent sense of place and longing.
