Hard on the heels of Crossroads and Save The Last Dancecomes the latest slick production from the MTV stable. Like its predecessors it demands little, but offers more than we might have hoped, thanks to a decent helping of laughs and charming leads in Gooding Jr. and Knowles.
Sure, there's a cliché lurking around every corner - smooth New York ad exec (Gooding Jr.) must return to small-town Georgia and lead a gospel choir to success in order to collect his inheritance - but it's good fun, the songs are great and the supporting characters endearingly quirky, not least Montell Jordan's squeaky-voiced felon.
The romance between Knowles and her leading man doesn't quite spark, and cutting 30 minutes wouldn't have hurt, but Saturday night disposable fluff is rarely as warm-hearted or exuberant as this.
