Watching the Oscars last night, you might have noticed host Jimmy Kimmel having a gernerous amount of fun at the expense of Matt Damon. It began with a rib about The Great Wall ("He gave Manchester By The Sea to his childhood friend and made a Chinese ponytail movie instead. Smart move, dumbass.") and only got worse from there. For the uninitiated, this is the continuation of a gag that's been running on Jimmy Kimmel Live for more than a decade and you can catch up on the complete history of the pair's 'feud' below.

2006

Back when Jimmy Kimmel Live! wasn’t booking first-rate guests the way it does today, the presenter threw in an on-going joke. He would close every show saying they had run out of time for the final guest, Matt Damon. When Damon finally made his Live! debut things went from bad to worse.

2007

Prior to the release of The Bourne Ultimatum, Kimmel aired his own special version of the trailer.

2008

Damon returns fire with the help of Kimmel’s then-girlfriend Sarah Silverman, unveiling the now famous spoof track Fucking Matt Damon, which has since racked up more than 16 million views.

2009

In response to Silverman and Damon's video, Kimmel fights back with his own musical number, drafting a barrage of celebrity helpers along the way.

2010

Damon has Kimmel voted out of The Handsome Men’s Club by the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Sting and Rob Lowe.

2012

When Kimmel put together his epic film Movie: The Movie starring every A-lister known to man, he once again snubbed Damon, but not before making him dress up as a bunch of sour grapes.

2013

Having taken Kimmel hostage, Damon takes over Jimmy Kimmel Live!

2013

Movie: The Movie returns for a sequel, once again at Damon's expense.

2013

Having replaced Damon in The Bourne Ultimatum, Guillermo returns to troll Elysium.

2014

Damon features on Kimmel's regular segment, Mean Tweets.

2014

The cast of The Monuments Men answer Kimmel's questions. All except one.

2015

In a bid to reconcile their differences, the pair gave couples counselling a go, with unsuccessful results.

2016

Ben Affleck smuggles his Good Will Hunting co-star onto Kimmel's show inside a fat suit.

2016

Damon goes undercover to reignite the feud, disguising himself to infiltrate a segment with Kimmel's Aunt Chippy.

2016

Because once wasn’t enough, the pair return to couples counselling.

2016

After his man-bun was insulted, Damon takes out an attack ad.

2016

Breaking the “one for me, one for you” flow of the feud, Matt was back with another attack at last year’s Emmy’s.

2017

After the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl, Damon disguises himself as Patriots hero Tom Brady.

2017

Damon comes out as the real father of Kimmel's wife's baby.

2017

All of which brings us up to date and nicely sets up this gag at last night's Oscars. All make sense now? Excellent.
