Few movies have made the impact on cinema (and pop culture) than Leone's spare, stylish slabs of Spaghetti. Fistful Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More) and The Good The Bad And The Ugly follows Clint Eastwood's enigmatic stranger (called Joe apparently) through gang warfare, bonkers bandits and, best of all, in the final movie, a hunt for hidden gold. Academics will drone on about Leone's stunning use of widescreen, Morricone's inventive use of discordant music and Eastwood's deconstruction of the Western archetype (all fair points) but what makes these endlessly rewatchable is inordinate cool and the sheer thrill of a filmmaker working at the top of his game. Three times.
