Aside from talking up his plans to work in the Alien universe (disappointing news on that one ahead!), Neill Blomkamp is constantly asked about any follow-ups to his 2009 hit District 9. He's hinted that he wants to move in that direction and now further confirms that's what he's been developing.
Talking to The Verge about his ambitious new studio Oats Studios, he mentions the various ideas he and his team are cooking up in the studio, plus his aim to co-write and direct a film based on Thomas Sweterlitsch's sci-fi story The Gone World.
Oats however, probably won't be used for his next step into the District 9 world because of existing assets elsewhere. "With District 9, I plan on making another film in that world," says Blomkamp. "To go back and work with WETA, and make the film would be cool, but anything that pre-exists like that may not be the best fit for whatever we're trying here."
As for his Alien film? Don't hold your breath. "I think it's totally dead, yes. That would be an accurate assumption at this point," he admits. "It’s sad. I spent a long time working on that, and I feel like it was really pretty awesome. But politically, the way it’s gone now, and the way that it all is – it’s just not going to live."
