Alex Gibney's documentary examines the stellar rise and catastrophobic demise of Eliot Spitzner, democrat governor of New York. Brought down by a scandal involving escort girls, there was more to the story than met the eye.
Disgraced New York governor Eliot Spitzer blames himself for his demise in a sex scandal in 2008. However, prolific documentarist Alex Gibney insists the disclosure of his membership of an escort service was an act of revenge by those Spitzer had come close to ruining in a Wall Street clean-up that some believe might have averted the global economic crisis. Switching restlessly between events in Spitzer’s rise and fall, Gibney blitzes the audience with information and opinion. Moreover, he lulls talking heads in both corners into revealing more than they might have intended.
In the spirit of all great political thrillers, Gibney follows the money to construct a mesmerising portrayal of corruption, vested interests and hidden agendas that would have made Pakula proud.
