The first, dark-hued trailer for Pixar's latest trip to Cars world suggested that the company – no stranger to the occasional tragic turn – might be planning a drastic fate for racing whizz Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson). This latest look at the movie suggests he'll simply be down, not out.

This time around, the film is focusing on Lightning, once the young hotshot of the track, now an older veteran struggling to keep up with the competition. He's especially challenged by newcomer Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) and will need a little help from technician Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo) if he's to match up.

There is little sign – yet – of much of the regular Cars team, but the likes of Bonnie Hunt, Tony Shalhoub, Cheech Marin and, of course, Larry "Mater" The Cable Guy are listed on the cast roster and that's definitely Mack the Truck (Pixar good luck charm John Ratzenberger) toting our hero around.

With Brian McFee taking over the director's chair, Cars 3 will be out in the UK on 14 July, following a June 16 debut across the pond.
