French sculptor Camille Claudel (Binoche) seems to be fraying, destroying her own artworks and accusing her former lover, Auguste Rodin, of dark plots against her. Her brother, Paul (Vincent), has her committed into an asylum from which there may be no escape.
Citing original writings and invoking Carl Dreyer, Bruno Dumont captures the anguish of injustice and insanity in recreating three days in the incarceration of the eponymous sculptress. Juliette Binoche excels, while the direction is as precise as the cinematography.
As meticulous as one of Claudel's sculptures, Hors Satan director Dumont and his star do this true-life story justice with an empathetic telling.
