In a pedestrian future, the American automobile industry has been undone by high petrol prices. A vegan kindergarten teacher (Mike Brune) tries to invent an engine which runs on wheatgerm but accidentally creates a vampire car — soon, he overcomes his reluctance to kill people to keep fuel in his tank and retain the social/sexual status that comes with being able to drive. Writer-director Alex Orr’s slight, wry, low-key black comedy-sci-fi-horror picture is a slacker take on Roger Corman movies like The Little Shop Of Horrors or Death Race 2000. It shrugs its cynical premise off a little too casually for lasting cult status and its gore moments are nothing new, but it does have some bizarro bite. Remember Anna Chlumsky from My Girl? She’s sweet as a grown-up nerdgirl with a crush on the protagonist.

With the intention of inventing a car that runs on wheatgerm, Archie (Mike Brune) ends up creating a car that runs on human blood. His desire to impress his crush (Katie Rowlett) with his ability to drive, in a future where fuel prices have rocketed, outweighs his unwillingness to murder.
