Christopher Nolan might be back in force at the box office with his latest, Interstellar, but whatever they’re putting in the water over at Disney is still working its magic. Big Hero 6, the Mouse House’s new Marvel-inspired ‘toon, took in $56.2 million and launched at the top spot on the US box office charts this weekend, according to studio estimates.

Nolan and co. don’t have to worry much though: despite Interstellar’s failure to meet lofty $60 million-plus expectations, it still made $50 million on its first weekend and, thanks to an earlier international roll out than Big Hero 6, is already up to more than $80 million outside America, with a hefty $132.25 million worldwide take. That's split between domestic distributors Paramount and international distributors Warner Bros.

David Fincher’s Gone Girl, meanwhile, actually ticked up a place from fourth in third, earning $6.1 million, pushing it ahead of last week’s champ, horror movie Ouija, which eked out a win over Nightcrawler when the final official figures came in, but fell to fourth this weekend with $6 million. Bill Murray indie comedy St. Vincent rounded out the top five with $5.7 million.

Nightcrawler, meanwhile, appeared to take a bigger hit than Ouija, falling from second to sixth place and $5.51 million. David Ayer’s tank thriller Fury rolled down to seventh place, earning $5.5 million, while Keanu Reeves revenge flick** John Wick** was eighth with $4 million.

Disney family comedy Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day slipped to ninth, likely hit by Big Hero 6 cutting into its audience. It made $3.4 million, while The Book Of Life, also a casualty of big family competition, sank from fifth to 10th with $2.8 million.
