Beyond The Pole

Adapted from a cult Radio 4 series, this mockumentary about the first carbon neutral, vegetarian and organic expedition to the North Pole laudably resists tub-thumping its eco-agenda to concentrate on the stresses facing two ordinary blokes as they stumble into history.

Racing against a pair of cocky gay Norwegians, Rhys Thomas and Stephen Mangan veer between chirpy optimism, bluffer’s bravura and crippling self-doubt as they seek to do their bit for the environment. The frequently improvised humour may be patchy, but this is a consistently enjoyable romp. Moreover, Mangan’s descent into madness edgily reinforces the message about the fragility of humanity and the planet.

Enjoyable adaptation of the cult Radio 4 comedy series.
