Robert Powell, newly arrived at the titular madhouse, listens to a succession of strange tales: Richard Todd chops up wife Sylvia Sims and is tormented by her individual body parts, which creep around wrapped in brown paper; tailor Barry Morse is hired by Peter Gushing to construct a magical suit which will revive the customer's dead son; neurotic Charlotte Rampling imagines (or does she?) a visit from bubbly murderess Britt Ekland; and nut-job Herbert Lom gets his own back on Patrick Magee by projecting his mind into sinister little toy robots.

It may not be as daring as Young Adam, but this is a well-performed adaptation of an absorbing melodrama.
