The changes Wong Kar-Wai has made to this 1994 wuxia effort are almost as irrelevant as its complex plot, in which Leslie Cheung’s innkeeper spins anecdotes about chivalric swordsmen and unattainable beauties. So what if much of the score’s been jettisoned and a few titles have been amended? Christopher Doyle’s mesmeric compositions remain unaltered, his experiments with colour, light and texture giving the imagery an artistry that majestically survive the moments of clumsy viscerality attempted during the fight sequences.
