Being AP

Try as he may, Anthony Wonke can’t create the tension he aims for in this documentary about Northern Irish jockey AP McCoy. Upon deciding to retire, his position as the greatest in history already secured with over 4,000 wins, McCoy aims to go out on a high. But while injury and circumstance force McCoy to dial back his expectations, Wonke still tries to play the traditional sports-movie beats, editing races that don’t much matter as if they’re nail-biters. This is much better as a film about the psychology of a champion, showing McCoy struggling with the idea of living without competition.

Wonke has the access to make a great documentary, but can’t quite find the perfect story focus to put this among the best sporting films.
