Original Title:

American Ultra

Sweet stoner couple Mike (Eisenberg) and Phoebe (Stewart) life a low-key life in a small town, an idyll that is threatened by a kind of Bourne with a bong, this pits Eisenberg and Stewart as a stoner couple, the twist being that Eisenberg is actually a brainwashed super-soldier who can improvise murder with any implement who is now facing a termination order. It’s ragged and messy but it has more energy, and ideas than more coherent so called successful films. Nourizadeh stages exaggerated bone-crunching action with cackle and glee but this gets by on Eisenberg and Stewart — he is a master of zero degree humour; so is she but adds a warm centre and something else up her sleeve.

A potential cult item in the making, American Ultra may be an acquired taste but it's chocful of invention.
