Mary Elizabeth Winstead Talks Smashed 'It's a scary thing to play drunk...'

| |
Mary Elizabeth Winstead has had her hands full on her last few appearances on the big screen, battling vampires, shapeshifting space bastards and now, in James Ponsoldt's punchy indie Smashed, the bottle. It's an unsparing depiction of alcoholism that pulls up a chair in movie AA alongside Leaving Las Vegas, The Lost Weekend and When a Man Loves a Woman, made all the more relatable by the quote-unquote 'fun' nature of her boozing. Her nursery teacher, Kate, even takes a beer into the shower with her. Empire met Winstead to ask about the biggest challenge of her career to date.
