When he was cast as Rene Belloq, nattily-dressed relic seeker from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Paul Freeman had no idea that he would become one of the most revered bad guys in cinematic history. "It was just another role at the time," reflects Freeman. "Of course, none of us had any idea it would become the classic it was, but it was a lot of fun. The film is just a wonderful adventure, which is what I think means it's lasted. I mean, it's 28 years and I'm still talking about Belloq. I've even become a Lego character [in computer game Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, out June 6]. Can't say I ever expected that. I think Belloq worked so well because he was a person. He was never just a one-dimensional bad guy who did bad things for the sake of it. He just wanted that Ark and he'd do whatever necessary to get it".
