While harebrained, button-bashing brawlers are the sort of unimaginative dross that twists the knickers of even the most forgiving gamer, the console worlds most frenetic genre is a perfect backdrop for bringing Marvels mutton-chopped bruiser to life.
Offering unbridled violence, gore, and a bad, bad attitude where the X-Men movies pull punches to get past the censors, Origins works flat-out to capture the fierce spirit of the comic books. The game allows players to leap across the room and shred rivals with Logans adamantium claws, effortlessly impale enemies on exposed pipes, or lift helicopter pilots into spinning rotor blades and slice their heads clean off. Even more gruesome, the blood and guts arent limited to Wolverines victims, the hairy heros skin getting torn from his metal bones as he takes damage and leaving his entrails exposed, making the volatile action feel even more raw.
When it comes to the crunch, though, theres nothing in Wolverines ultraviolent adventure that you havent seen a hundred times before, and while the game captures the essence of what makes the grumpiest X-Man so appealing, the relentless hackin and slashin soon becomes stale during an extended session.
