Worms 4: Mayhem Review

Another dose of invertebrate action that reverts to the winning sytem of old

Ten years after the seminal series first wriggled onto consoles, Worms 4: Mayhem sees the anarchic annelids returning in their biggest and most complex outing to date. But whether you think it's any good or not completely depends on your sense of humour.

Fans of the series will be delighted that Team 17 has spurned the real-time strategy of Worms Forts: Under Siege in favour of the turn-based battles of yesteryear, with packs of brave invertebrates using outrageous weapons to blow their enemies to smithereens or dunk them in the drink. The traditional experience is also enhanced by allowing players to customise everything from their spineless soldiers to the weapons they use, allowing Worms buffs to tailor the experience to suit their own tastes, making for months of tactical battles and limitless multiplayer carnage.

But does the sight of a worm wearing Elvis sunglasses and a '70s disco wig send you into paroxysms of laughter? Will you piss your pants if you butcher your opponents with an Inflatable Scouser, Exploding Granny or Bovine Blitz?Would a worm cursing you in a helium-sucking voice as it's shot towards the horizon tickle your funny bone? If the answer is yes, then add an extra couple of stars to the score below and purchase forthwith! But if irritating playground humour sets your teeth on edge, avoid Worms 4 and get your strategic kicks elsewhere.
