WipEout 2048

A dramatic reboot for the vintage anti-gravity racing series, WipEout 2048 is a silky smooth speedster that beautifully demonstrates the graphical wonders Sony's new gizmo is capable of, and will make the even most curmudgeonly player marvel at how far videogaming has come since the series' PlayStation debut over 17 years ago.

Unlike earlier console editions of WipEout where newbies would spend days bouncing off the crash barriers until theyd nailed the twitchy controls, piloting your slippery ride in 2048 is simple and intuitive, especially during the early races where the tracks are wide and wild, and the PS Vitas large screen allows you to perfectly judge the tightest bend as it comes hurtling towards you.

A pumping techo soundtrack, clever courses that blend contemporary landmarks with futuristic twists and spirals, and a variety of control options that allow you to tinker with your machines also make WipEout 2048 the PS Vita's star pupil, and the game Empire recommends buying on launch day. But be warned: 2048 features some of the most exacerbating loading times in gaming history, periodically bringing the frenetic action to a standstill when all your want to do is shove a rocket up an opponent's tailpipe.
