The Rock comes to this driving game but it doesn't really work.


Despite its primitive graphics and repetitive challenges, the Spy Hunter coin-op still holds a special place in gamers’ hearts, its tricked-out sports car making James Bond’s Aston Martin look like a pensioner’s weekend runaround. But in reimagining the driving franchise as a vehicle for the ‘physical’ acting of The Rock, Midway has somehow thrown the baby out with the bathwater.

Within moments of starting the game the glorious Interceptor car is nicked by terrorists, kicking off a series of derivative, sluggish brawling levels where a poorly drawn Rock lumbers into a locked rooms, lays the smackdown on an endless wave of dumbass enemies, finds a key and repeats the whole sorry process all over again.

And when you eventually get to drive the car – which thrillingly transforms from a motorcycle into a speedboat depending on the situation – the lousy handling and inability to aim your guns properly means that Spy Hunter’s one redeeming feature is cruelly pissed away.
