Ferocious adventure that rewards the patient
A brutal tsunami of violence, flashing shuriken and ancient magic, Ninja Gaiden: Sigma 2 is the stuff of dreams for anyone who likes their gaming action fast and clean. But dont be deceived by its simple set-up this ferocious adventure will drive all but the most determined player to controller-smashing despair.
Although Sigma 2 is markedly easier than the nigh-on impossible Xbox 360 original, its still a cruel and unforgiving experience that mercilessly punishes players who think they can rush through the story by pummelling the attack buttons, instead rewarding those who learn to block, dodge attacks and carefully choose the best moment to strike. Yet while the game is hard and nails and will see many players giving up before theyve even 10 per cent of what Sigma 2 has to offer, stick with it and youll discover one of the most satisfying gaming experiences in recent memory, the chaotic action forcing players to master the controls, think like a ninja, and become confident tackling bosses that tower above them like skyscrapers.
A handful of alternative characters with different play styles and a titanic range of imaginative enemies also make Sigma 2 one of the purest action games this year, but fans of the series will be disappointed by how the blood and gore has been toned down for the PS3, stripping the game of one of its most sickening attractions.
