The grim world of the Satanic blockbuster is the ideal backdrop for a spot of devil bashing

★★★★★

Shifting the accursed action from Liverpool to the mean streets of Los Angeles may have outraged fans of the Hellblazer comics, but the grim world of the Satanic blockbuster is the ideal backdrop for a spot of devil-bashing.
In a nod to the classic Soul Reaver games, the troubled hero can swap between LA and the smouldering streets of hell to solve inter-dimensional puzzles; when you jump from Earth to Beelzebub’s manor, for example, you may see a crumbling wall in the same place as an impassable barrier in the real world, and destroying the obstacle means you can pop back to the earthly realm and continue your journey.

The outrageous weapons, such as a submachine gun that fires crucifixion nails, make for a boisterous blast of demon-slaying, and the magical spells that require dexterity on the gamepad to tap out rhythmic codes give Constantine a fresh feel, despite the fact that it shamelessly steals from a wide range of action games.
