Real-time strategy game for the spin-off from Oliver Stone’s bombastic biopic

★★★★★

Most history books credit Alexander as the greatest military strategist of all time, so it’s no surprise that Ubisoft plumped for a real-time strategy game for the spin-off from Oliver Stone’s bombastic biopic. But following in the wake of last year’s Rome: Total War — a game that re-energised the strategy genre with its epic scale and complex gameplay — this primitive cash-in simply doesn’t cut it.

The game offers a wide variety of missions based on the Great one’s conquests, along with scenarios devoted to his fiercest foes. But hardcore strategy
nuts will feel frustrated by the simplified controls, while casual gamers will be disappointed by the crummy visuals on display here.

Those who enjoyed the movie may also feel cheated as the package only boasts a handful of in-game movies featuring Colin Farrell, and, although the Vangelis soundtrack is present in all its rousing glory, none of the Alexander actors took the time to voice their own digital doubles.
