His Dark Materials Northern Lights

Genres Drama, Thriller, Action, Fantasy

Film synopsis Adaptation of the first book (or book and a half) of Philip Pullman's award-winning series. Pre-teen Lyra leaves her home at an Oxford college to face danger and kidnappers at the North Pole. She is aided in her quest by her daemon familiar Pantalaimon, an armoured polar bear and a mysterious golden compass - after which the US version of the book and film (His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass) takes its name.

I read all three volumes of His Dark Materials in a week - couldn't put them down. However, I have my doubts as to whether I'll be satisfied with the film, mainly because of what I've read regarding the toning down of the anti - Catholic sentiments of the books. Nicole Kidman would seem to be ideal casting for the role of Mrs Coulter, as I've always thought of her as having a rather cold personality. As for the rest, I guess I'll just have to wait and see and hope that they do one of my favo More

I'm going over the books again and just finished Northern Lights last night. I do reallly have a soft fpot for the books, but am still worried about how it's gonna translate onto scree, and what parts, if any, they are goin to chop out. It's quite a heavy novel with heavy themes and by no means a kids book, quite brutal in parts with younglings dying and such, I only hope they dont "kiddiefy" it too much.  More

RE: RE:
I can't wait to see this film. I loved the books/story and think the guys in charge of the film version are doing a cracking job, from what ive seen. I would've done a few things different myself, yeah, design wise, but thats cause im a designer and illustrated the book myself in uni. I always thought of it being very victorian in appearance, the Bears in Samurai-style plated metal armour, the Zepplins looking exactly like Hindenburg (just traditional white canvas) and of Azriel as a Jame More

Er...good question but i don't think that they are. There would probably have been more news about the others and i guess they want to make sure it does well at the box office? I could be wrong however! There is a little behind the scenes thing at aintitcool today. Kind of just looks like the behind the scenes of the new trailer.  More
